Description
Sandton is arguably South Africa’s most upmarket suburb and the Riverclub Golf Club upholds this reputation to a tee, so to speak. But while Sandton is a buzzing urban metropolis, the Riverclub course offers serenity to those lucky enough to grace its lush, green kikuyu fairways.
The surroundings are a mix of plush residential establishments and woodlands. Established in 1967, designed by Bob Grimsdell and upgraded by Rob O’Friel in 1998, the course is regularly rated among the top 10 in South Africa.
The par 71, 18-hole Johannesburg course is fairly flat and offers some challenging dog-leg holes. You will no doubt be grateful for local advice about how to best approach such holes, which you can get from the member you are playing with, or from one of the experienced caddies at the course.
According to a review on the Where2Golf website, Riverclub is the most elite golf course in Johannesburg, because of how rarely it is used. The review raves about the ‘inspired’ par 3s, particularly the 17th hole, which requires a long drive over water. The finishing stretch of this course is regarded as one of the most challenging in South Africa.
